The Secret River is a stunning natural attraction just south of the charming town of Bacalar.  This popular day trip takes you to a unique section of the famous Laguna Bacalar (Lagoon of Seven Colors), where a narrow, shallow channel creates a gentle, natural “lazy river” effect with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Float with lifejackets, swim, kayak, paddleboard and much more! An absolutely unforgettable adventure you will talk about for ages.

Small Tour Description (Round-Trip from Costa Maya)
Duration: Typically 5–6 hours total (including travel)

Itinerary Overview:

Departure from Costa Maya: Meet your guide or driver at the port just outside the gate for independent/private tours. Board a comfortable air-conditioned travel van for the scenic ~1-hour 45 minute drive through jungle roads and small towns to the Bacalar area.
Arrival at The Lazy River: Head directly to this hidden gem—a serene, narrow waterway connecting parts of the Bacalar lagoon.
Main Activity: Float, swim, or drift along the gentle current in the warm, turquoise waters as many times as you like. You’ll be surrounded by lush mangroves and ancient stromatolites (rare, living rock-like formations billions of years old, sometimes called “living fossils” ). Relax in partially submerged hammocks, rent a kayak or paddleboard (extra cost), or simply enjoy the peaceful flow—it’s a natural lazy river perfect for all ages.

Chicken for lunch: After an unforgettable time at the Secret River, enjoy fresh grilled chicken with rice, beans and tortillas and an ice cold beverage from a local restaurant in downtown Bacalar. A taste of traditional Mexican food prepared and served by locals. Food and drinks are available at the Secret River if you like (not included)

You will make a short stop at the popular Pineapple Village where you can try a bit of fruit and have the opportunity to purchase some local produce for your trip back to port. Highly recommend the pineapples and mangos!

Return to Costa Maya: After your relaxation time (typically 1.5 – 2 hours at the Secret River), head back by van to arrive safely at the port with plenty of buffer before all-aboard, so you can explore the Costa Maya port and everything it has to offer.
This excursion offers a refreshing, off-the-beaten-path escape from the cruise port—think crystal-clear freshwater paradise, nature immersion, and tranquility amid stunning scenery. It’s family-friendly, with life jackets provided.

How to find meeting spot at port

When you walk down the pier stay to the right to enter directly into the bus parking lot. Try not to enter the shopping area because its like a maze and hard to find the exit. After passing the busses walk away from the ship, down the sidewalk of the only road leading away from the ship. You will pass the first security booth in the middle of the road. That booth is fake and meant to mislead passengers into thinking that is the exit but you must walk 30 yards further to reach the second security booth and the real exit to Costa Maya port. There will be a crosswalk here and youll find many taxi drivers and tour guides holding whiteboards with customers names on them. Your driver will be holding a whiteboard with your name on it. If you need help just show the maps provided to anyone working at the port and they will help guide you, or contact me at 1 989 670 3528
